Why is the Naracoorte National Park so special?
The Naracoorte Caves National Park is South Australia’s only World Heritage listed site. Naracoorte forms the Southern aspect of Eastern Australia’s Fossil Mammal Sites World Heritage Area, with Riversleigh Fossil site, located in far north-west Queensland forming the Northern aspect.
Both these sites are of great Palaeontological significance and represent two separate areas where fossils from the Cainozoic era have been found. Naracoorte is officially recognised for its significance in ‘depicting the story’ of Australia’s unique and diverse animal heritage, and the key stages of evolution in Australia's unique fauna.
A glimpse into Australia’s Megafauna of the past will astound you. Spanning several ice ages and like trap doors in history, the caves formed natural pitfall traps where animals would fall through holes in the ground unable to escape. Over 500,000 years, the animal remains were preserved in time and give the most complete fossil records of Australia’s Fauna.
The bones of Megafauna species such as Thylacoleo carnifex Marsupial Lion, Thylacine, Zygomaturus and Sthenurine kangaroos have been found in the fossil deposits, and Palaeontologists have excavated and dated many of the fossils in Naracoorte Caves, reconstructing the skeletons of a number of the megafauna that inhabited the area so many years ago.
Declared Victoria's first National Park in 1892, Tower Hill reserve sits within an extinct Volcano formed some 30,000 years ago.
A real wild life haven, Tower Hill offers its visitors the chance to get close to nature with a guided walk and the rare opportunity to see Australia’s most iconic native birds and animals including emus, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and seasonal reptiles.
Enjoy magnificent scenery and landscapes as you learn of Tower Hills unique Aboriginal heritage and take part in an interactive Aboriginal Interpretation where you will handle unique and original Aboriginal artefacts, experience bush tucker, and throw a Boomerang.
There’s also time to explore the wonderful gift shop and pick-up an original Australiana souvenir or two, or treat yourself to a coffee or ice cream and simply relax and admire the beautiful surroundings.
